HISTORY OF SHERWOOD FOREST BAPTIST CHURCH

In April of 1957 a lot and an old peach shed was donated by Herman Cooper, Harry Butler, Paul Camp , Jr. and C.G. Harris to the Baptist Association for the purpose of starting a Baptist mission in the subdivision of Sherwood Forest. On October 9, 1957, a mission called Sherwood Forest Baptist Chapel was estabilished with Rev. D. Lamar Smith as its first pastor. On March 12, 1961 the chapel became a church. On that day the little mission became the Sherwood Forest Baptist Missionary Baptist Church. The first deacons were selected and some ordained on May 28, 1961. They were Mack Thomas, E. E. Alexander, John B. Free, Charles Lear, Sherold Salmon, H. E. Green, and Ralph Cooper. On March 4, 1962, a building containing a temporary sanctuary and 5 educational rooms was dedicated. On April 14, 1963, the second story was occupied, housing 12 educational rooms. On Feburary 20, 1972, the present sanctuary (pictured below) was first occupied and in 1986 a new parking lot accommodating approximately 30 cars was added where the pastorium was previously located.
